Wayne Wei-Jen Fu

This is a photo from the CR division graduation party in 2004. Wayne was always game to try new things like taking a few swings at the condo driving range. He was terrible, but he had fun!

Dr Fu, I am so grieved to hear the news of your passing away. You were a teacher, mentor and friend to me. As a teacher and mentor, I remember you as someone who was sincere, compassionate and very understanding of my difficulties, and yet completely uncompromising when it came to learning and practicing the rigors of academic research. Every meeting, every tutorial would end with you emphasising the importance of academic honesty and thoroughness. No matter how low my spirits were at the beginning of discussions, I would leave feeling strong and inspired. As a friend, you were always willing to listen, always enquiring about our progress in life and taking an interest in how we were doing. And in spite of your remarkable achievements, you were always so humble to call some of us “your teachers” because we had some working experience. I cannot forget all these truly enlightening and learning moments with you. You were a wonderful father always speaking so proudly of your eldest son then; and a good son, when you spoke about your parents with piety and love. It will be very difficult to come to terms with your loss. My only regret is that I didn’t speak to you before coming to Arizona. You will always remain in my thoughts. As it was from you that I had first learnt the rigors of academic research, I dedicate the research I am now embarking on in ASU to your memory. Rest in peace Dr Fu.

Dr Fu taught me in the year 2002. He is a dedicated and responsible teacher who responded to our questions in class.he was teaching a module on qualitative analysis. 

Wayne was my advisee in the PhD Program at Northwestern University and quickly became a dear friend
and much loved colleague.  An unquenchable love of life and learning made every moment with Wayne a
joy.  We have collaborated on research, hiked, kyaked, and visited each other's homes in the years since he
finished his PhD.  I anticipated continued friendship and collaboration with Wayne for the rest of my life.
His passing is a tremendous loss to all of us who knew him well.

Glad to have shared special moments in my life with you; like hiking up the Acropolis together. I recall your kindness and sharing of historical knowledge as you accompanied my mother up the steep slopes. She speaks of you fondly, and shares in my grief at this great loss. It's remarkable how you made an impression on people even in chance meetings. Will miss you deeply, friend and mentor.
